Typical Day at a Sober Living Home

When calculating the total cost of recovery housing, you have to consider expenses for outpatient treatments. While men are just as likely to have substance abuse problems, women face unique challenges in addiction recovery.1,2 Women’s sober homes offer specialized care for their needs. During your time in a sober living home for women, you may receive outpatient rehab services and take part in activities that were specifically designed for women in recovery. During groups, you will be with other women who understand what you’ve endured and who can provide meaningful support that reflects your specific experiences. This can help you address sensitive topics or process emotional responses that you might be hesitant or unwilling to bring up in a mixed-gender setting. Women’s sober living houses may also be referred to as sober living homes, sober living residences, and halfway houses for women. It is common for individuals living in a sober living house to be in charge of their groceries, medications, and income.

Substance use treatment providers may offer oversight in some instances, although this is not always the case. Sober living homes provide a structured setting where individuals can focus on their recovery, build healthy relationships, develop life skills, and gain the necessary support to maintain long-term sobriety. There are a number of reasons for a person to stay local and close to his or her treatment facility for a period of time. Maintaining relationships and connections one makes during his or her treatment program can be helpful in one’s continued sobriety. Additionally, many facilities will offer therapeutic sessions or group sessions (i.e. Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous) on site that all who wish to attend are welcome. Part of an individual’s aftercare plan will be to figure out what residence location will be best for the person immediately following the completion of his or her treatment program.

Hope House

Hope House NYC was created by Topeka K. Sam and Vanee Sykes, both formerly incarcerated women who met while in Danbury Federal Prison in 2013. Hope House NYC is for single women who have experienced incarceration and are returning to New York City. Housing is available to women for up to one year as they readjust to seeing their families, being in their communities, healing themselves and seeking employment and educational opportunities. At the conclusion of the year, our plan is for women to move into permanent housing, while retaining their connection to Hope House NYC for support. We encourage you to give us a call to determine the exact cost of a sober living home.

The home receives no money from state, federal or local governments. It is supported strictly from private donations from businesses, banks, churches and individuals. There is a nominal fee for room and board to those who are able to pay. However, no person needing help is turned away due to inability to pay.

We’ll go over these benefits in more detail below, but some of the many include 12-step programs, structure, responsibility, and establishing a sober fellowship. I’ve worked in the recovery field since 2007 and have also been the recipient of treatment services. I know how important it is to have access to good care by committed providers. A women’s sober living house is a gender-specific group home for adult women who are recovering from addictions to alcohol and other drugs. Oakwood will depend upon continued community-wide aid for its success. Gratitude House is being established in response to a dire need for a safe, dignified and comfortable sober-living home for women who are suffering from the disease of alcoholism, drug abuse and prescription pill abuse. Currently there is NO sober-living home for women in all of St. Louis County where the focus is strictly on recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction.
